Get to Know Father Ted!

Father Ted and Oreo, His Sheltie, 2001
A prolific reader and writer all of his life, Father Ted could take you on a journey of laughter, tears, intrigue and introspection with his words. His first book, "The Haunted House On Hawthorne Street" was semi-autobiographical. It followed a middle aged family man as he returns to his childhood home after being told that he has only a few months to live. The journey and the memories of those long-ago days lead him to an acceptance of his destiny.
Father Ted wrote many articles during his years as an advertising executive, promotions director and priest. In keeping with the Christmas season, one of his earlier works is included, below. Others can be found in the Christmas section of this site.
We invite you to enjoy them, as we have through the years!
The Greatest Story Ever Told
by Ted Berndt, 1953
Every Christmas Eve we come to church to hear a story we already know by heart. A story that is nearly 2000 years old. Its words ring out like organ notes combining power with a beauty that strikes us deep and stays forever.
It tells of hope for the hopeless - courage for the frightened - forgiveness for the unforgivable - faith for the faithless. It promises life everlasting. It asks but one thing-
BELIEF.
It makes youth an eternal thing, for who can grow old when death is not the end of life but only its beginning?
Perhaps the most familiar part of this story goes like this...
And the angel said unto them,
"Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this sall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace, good will toward men."
It is the greatest story ever written. No one can hear it without sitting up straighter, breathing deeper and feeling light and warm inside.
